Fyodor Ivanovich Buslaev said: “Native language is an inexhaustible treasury of the whole ecclesiastical existence of a man.” We must preserve and multiply this ecclesiastical being, strengthening and developing our native language.
Indeed, native language, traditions and customs form the basis of cultural heritage, ecclesiastical existence, and every nation is proud of it, strives to ensure that its language, culture, values are understood and respected. For this purpose, various cultural centers are created, classical literature is translated into different languages, cultural festivals, creative competitions, language competitions are organized and held. Such international cultural and educational centers as “Confucius Institute”, “Goethe Institute” and “Cervantes Institute” are known worldwide: their activities are aimed at dissemination of language and culture in the world community.
Of course, the worthy place among all the multicolour languages on the planet is for the Russian language, which attracts with its wealth and expressiveness. Our classic writers have done a lot to glorify the Russian language, to reveal its limitless possibilities. And what can we, the people living in the XXI century, do in order to strengthen the Russian language in our country and confidently walk the planet?
Five years ago, Pyatigorsk State University joined the process of creating and opening the Pushkin Institute’s Russian Language and Culture Centers as part of the Russian Language and Education Promotion Program outlined in the Russian Federation in accordance with the tasks set by the President and the Government of the country, and started to implement the main vectors of this program. Promotion of the Russian brand “Pushkin Institute” was one of the most important tasks of this program. The creation of the “Pushkin Institute” Center was an interesting and significant event for the university in 2014, which was declared the Year of Culture in Russia.
It is important that the Russian brand is associated with the name of A.S. Pushkin, a genius who was ahead of the Russian consciousness. It was he who created the Russian literary language, freed it from archaic forms, seeing beauty and harmony in simplicity. Our task is studying and spreading the heritage of the great poet, the Great Russian word.
Centers for the study of the Russian language and culture can cover the whole world; they become a kind of strong and starting points for the promotion of the Russian language and culture in the global space. The modern approach to the study of the Russian language in the world is, in addition to the traditional methods and techniques of teaching, the use of electronic distance learning with a focus on the MOOK-model (these are mass educational online courses). A number of such courses are created by a team of authors of our university; they are posted on the portal “Education in Russian” and help to study the Russian language anywhere in the world.
We help foreign teachers by training them in advanced training programs. So it was in Tajikistan, Spain, Portugal. The Russian language competitions for foreign participants also contribute to the growth of interest in the study of the Russian language.
The Russian language research on topical issues of Russian linguoculture, philology, the spread of philological knowledge among foreign students in foreign countries and in the North Caucasus Federal district contribute to the growing interest in the study of Russian. By teaching Russian we raise respect and love for the Russian language, culture, spiritual heritage of Russia, actively participate in the promotion of the Russian language and education in Russian in foreign countries.
Pyatigorsk State University has become a full-fledged member of partnership network “Pushkin Institute”. The partnership network also includes partner-universities of our University, in which such centers are created: Changchun University in China, University of Campania “Luigi Vanvitelli”, the University of Cadiz, Piaget Institute in Portugal, the University of Pula in Croatia, the University of Warmia and Mazury in Poland, Assiut University in Egypt and the Russian language Center at Hastings College in the United States of America. Originally established as Centers of Russian language and culture, with its priority educational purpose, these Centers are now beginning to play a significant role in strengthening the Russian language in the educational systems of foreign countries.
become an initiator of innovative project: for the first time in schools of the city of Viseu, Russian is introduced as a second foreign language. Thanks to this, students got to know that there is such a country - Russia, its capital – Moscow, and the language – Russian, and for the first time in these schools were held New Year’s parties with the “Russian element”: there was Santa Claus, snow maiden, snowflakes. An interesting fact: in the days of the World Cup in Russia, Portuguese students even recorded a video in Russian in support of their team, that is «they were rooting in Russian-style».
In Egypt, the situation is different: here on the basis of the Center students study Russian to use it in their future career. Within two months it holds an intensive training, where the focus is given to speaking, while grammar plays an accompanying role.
The Center of the Russian language and culture “Pushkin Institute” has opened new opportunities for Russian students and undergraduates planning to teach Russian to foreign students. “Pushkin Institute” gave the opportunity to practice in the form of tutoring. These opportunities are widely used by undergraduates studying in the direction of “Pedagogical education” (master program “Linguistic and pedagogical models in the teaching of Russian as a РУССКИЙ ЯЗЫК foreign language”).
Thus, summing up these facts, we can conclude that recently created Centers already play a significant role in the promotion of the Russian language and culture in the world, in strengthening the Russian language in their own educational systems of foreign countries. They spread philological knowledge among foreign students, create a valuable orientation of young people to study the Russian language, knowledge of Russian culture, educate respect for the spiritual heritage of Russia.
The establishment of Centers “Pushkin Institute” as a multiplane and multi-faceted project to support the global status of the Russian language expanded the possibilities of education in the Russian language and generally strengthened the prestige of the Russian higher education and the status of the Pyatigorsk State University as a center of diverse languages and cultures.
