In 1976 he graduated from Mendeleev Institute of Chemical Technologies, specialty «Chemistry and technology of basic organic synthesis». Starting his professional activity as junior research assistant, he grew to the post of Director on science and development of the OJSC «Schelkovo company Agrokhim».
Since 1998, Salis Dobayevich is Director General of the CJSC «Schelkovo Agrokhim». At that time, he took up two unprofitable enterprises, but shortly he managed to turn them into efficient agrochemical complex. Now it is a sophisticated, high-productive enterprise the backbone of which is well-knit team of valuable scientific staff.
The company «Schelkovo Agrokhim» was created in 1998 on the basis of the Research Institute of Plant Protection Chemistry (RIPPC) and the OJSC «Schelkovo company Agrokhim».
It should be noted that former «Schelkovo company Agrokhim» was, in its time, the oldest enterprise producing sulfuric acid, mineral salts, pesticides, catalysts, oiling agents for the fur and leather industry and organic/inorganic substances. Its Leninskiy branch was one of the leading institutes having a high scientific potential, which constituted afterwards the scientific core of new «Schelkovo Agrokhim». Initially, the enterprise had only one working shop and a few laboratories. The number of employees amounted to a total of 60 people. The range of products was not too great. They were mainly pesticides manufactured under license of Rohn-Poulenc: zolon and dezormon.
Today «Schelkovo Agrokhim» is a powerful multi-chemical plant, which produces chemicals for various branches of Russian industry and agriculture.
The enterprise has a number of productions facilities, but the leading position is given to plant protection chemicals destined for agro-industrial complex. In spite of the fact that the history of the company began with inorganic chemicals, at present the technical and technological capabilities of «Schelkovo Agrokhim» allow to produce a wide range of products: catalysts, adsorbents, salts of nickel, cobalt, selenium and tellurium, up to oiling agents for leather and fur industry. Various reagents, dyes, semi-finished of medicinal and pharmaceutical purposes are also produced here. A high level of automation, the use of up-to-date equipments of leading foreign marks made manufacturing of perfumery-cosmetic goods, as well as goods of household chemistry possible.
The CJSC «Schelkovo Agrokhim» is a modern and dynamically developing company. It is one of the leaders in production and sale of plant protection chemical agents. The company possesses research laboratories, experimental and production base, a network of representative offices both in Russia and in CIS countries. «SCHELKOVO AGROKHIM»: PRODUCTION OF CEREALS AND LEGUMINOUS PLANTS
«Schelkovo Agrokhim» is a diversified enterprise. The management directs its efforts toward constant improvement and expanding of production and research possibilities, exploration of new fields of activity, development of livestock and crop sectors. The farm «Dubovitskoe» served as a base for the creation of a new agricultural complex which is today a modern hi-tech enterprise, oriented on the production of grain crops, sugar beet, as well as seeds of grain and legume crops. The agricultural complex hosts international conferences bringing together specialists from all over Russia and from CIS; they exchange experience, get acquainted with the achievements of the enterprise.
A modern grain complex was constructed here a few years ago, its capacities are: production of seed — 20 tons per hour, reception and processing of grain — 40 tons per hour. This is the first plant in the Orel region producing high-quality seed. 34 thousand tons of grain can be stored here simultaneously. The agricultural complex is equipped with the up-to-date facilities ensuring the purity of seed fund.
The computer center makes possible monitoring of accurate separation of seeds by their varieties.
There is a genetic center functioning in Lipetsk region created with the purpose of production of dairy calves embryos outside of a living organism and with the subsequent implantation of the embryo. The Center is the first of this kind in the Russian Federation, it marks a new cattle breeding technology, which is being successfully implemented here.
«SCHELKOVO AGROKHIM»: MODERN UNIT OF DOMESTIC PELLETED SUGAR BEET SEEDS
In the framework of the target program «Development of Russian sugar-beet industry in 2010–2012», the company «Schelkovo Agrokhim» has constructed in Voronezh region a plant of pelleted sugar-beet seeds LLC «BetaGran Ramon» having high production capacity..
The plant built in Voronezh region is the first in Russia to produces seeds of this kind. Formerly, before the plant has been constructed, pelleted sugar-beet seeds were imported from abroad. The difference between pelleted seeds and ordinary ones is that pelleted seeds are exposed, before being planted, to a very complex technological treatment: first, seeds are grinded and then they are mixed with minerals, growth stimulants and desinsectant agents and finally are treated by chemicals. This protective coat in no way harms the plant, but safely protects it from numerous pests that attack from the first day in soil. As a result, the germinating ability of seeds becomes very high. Therefore, seeds can be sowed single-piece: 6 pieces per running meter with planned density per hectare of 100 thousand pieces.
The CJSC «Schelkovo Agrokhim» covers 40% of Russian market needs in pelleted sugar-beet seeds.
«SCHELKOVO AGROKHIM»: QUALITY OF WORLD LEVEL
Products of the CJSC «Schelkovo Agrokhim» are distinguished from the other by innovative solutions and latest production technologies used in their processing. Increasing of competitiveness and quality of final product is also due to the efficient and effective management of the enterprise which, in turn, became possible when quality management system was elaborated and introduced within the company in accordance with the requirements of ISO.
«Schelkovo Agrokhim» is a worldwide exporter: its products are sold and appreciated in almost all agricultural regions of Russia, in CIS countries as well as in the international market. Besides pelleted sugar beet seeds, grain crops and leguminous plants, the company produces micro-fertilizer, fodder and other chemicals.
«Schelkovo Agrokhim» produces chemical preparations of new generation:
Herbicides — chemical substances used for the vegetation destruction.
Insecticides — chemical preparations for the extermination of harmful insects.
Insecticide protectants — chemical preparations for the treatment of seeds to fight against pests in the soil and on shoots.
Fumigant insecticides — chemical preparations against insects.
Fungicides — chemicals to combat fungal diseases of plants and also for treatment of seeds.
Fungicide protectants — chemical preparations for the treatment of seeds against seed and soil infections.
Rodenticides — chemical substances for the destruction of hazardous warm-blooded animals (gophers, field-voles, mice, rats and birds).
Pheromones — biologically active substances excreted by animals and influencing behavior, physiological and emotional state or metabolism of other animals of the same species.
«Schelkovo Agrokhim» is a large-scale producer of microfertilizers.
Microfertilizers compared with ordinary fertilizers are highly efficient and economical; they have low-toxic effect on soil, plants and environment. Microfertilizers are product of modern high nanotechnologies. Multi-component and one-component fertilizers produced by «Schelkovo Agrokhim» are destined to prevent and eliminate main elements deficiency in different periods of crops growing. They are used for foliar fertilizing with the purpose of improvement of the vegetative growth and development of plants, to increase their productivity and quality. The efficiency of mineral NPK-fertilizers application in intensive technologies of crop production significantly increases with the use of microelements.
The CJSC «Schelkovo Agrokhim» also produces fodder. Companies LLC «Biocor» and CJSC «Schelkovo Agrokhim» deliver combined fodder to the market– pre-starter of new generation — «Prebiox» destined for pigs in suckling and after-wean period. The new product «Prebiox» was elaborated by a group of scientists on the basis of physiology, gastroenterology, kinetics of biochemical processes, molecular microecology and after long years of experience and testing. It is a product of new quality radically different from products of the other manufacturers.
Combined fodder provides:
— high degree of protection against toxins of different nature by means of joint effect of oxidation-reduction tandem liver and microflora;
— fast renewal of norm-flora and suppression of pathogens with simultaneous feed of colonocytes and enterocytes in the digestive tract;
— harmonious formation of membrane and microbial digestion;
— adequate and balanced number of «fast» nutrients (amino acids, sugar), as well as highly active biological molecules;
— unique safety of stock in after-wean period, within the limits of 95–98%;
— stress-free weaning non complicated by digestion stops and weight loss;
— high digestibility of combined fodder with a low conversion rate (1.2–1.4);
— considerable decrease of expenses for veterinary activities in after-wean period, mainly for antibiotics;
— stable and increasing weight gain in comparison with other fodder systems;
— preservation of the outperformance of weight gain during the transition to starter fodders;
— fodder does not contain antibiotics, ionophores, zinc oxide, copper sulfate! It does not contain soy and GMO.
with Director General of the CJSC «Schelkovo Agrokhim» Mr. Karakotov S. D.
Question. Salis Dobayevich, you are the founder of such a huge and modern agro-chemical complex. Of course, it is the result of a long-term tireless and inspired work demanding self-sacrifice. What have you been motivated by during all these years?
Karakotov S. D. All began in the hard 90‑s. At that time I was director of Schelkovo branch of the RIPPC (Research Institute of Plant Protection Chemicals) and saw with my own eyes the agrochemical industry collapse. Because of serious objective reasons. In this situation, I considered my duty to preserve, at all costs, the valuable scientific potential and to save the enterprise from the definitive crash. It was absolutely necessary to get through this difficult period in the development of the country with minimum losses and to preserve at least what was remaining.
Question. But you have not only preserved, you’ve progressed further.
Karakotov S. D. I had the sense of acute responsibility before the people whom I called to follow me and who trusted me. In no way I had the right to relax even for a minute. The industry was in the ruins and needed to be raised. My childhood passed on a faraway farm called «Storozhevsky» (Zelenchuk district, Karachay-Cherkes republic), so the agricultural work was not something new for me, I was familiar with it since early age. This knowledge in a big way helped me to survive in difficult situations.
Question. What are the main activities of your enterprise at the present phase of development?
Karakotov S. D. Despite the fact that we are a company producing plant protection chemicals, our main activity has beens the improvement of cultivation technologies lately not only associated with the plants cultivation methods, but with regard to general preparation of soil, improvement of seeding conditions. In this connection, the thought came to me that we should not simply provide protection of plants, but ensure full comprehensive care of plants including in general such concept as plant servicing with all constituent elements: machinery, tillage, preparation of seeds, monitoring and management of the growth, regulation of growth processes, phases of development, schedule of interventions, etc…
And to make it not merely in words but in deeds, we first implement new ideas on our pilot farm located in Orel region. We have practiced it long since. This is our conscious choice, because to show one time by own example is better than to repeat thousand times. Our farm serves us as testing area where we introduce all our means of plant protection and care, test new technologies of seeds, soils, treatment etc… Therefore, we are not chemists, we are agrotechnologists.
Question. Russia’s accession to the WTO, what effect had it on your industry?
Karakotov S. D. We were striving for a long time to join the WTO, and when we finally joined the organization, in our joy we «have thrown away the baby with the bath water». The long accession to the WTO pushed us far away from the real needs of the agriculture. Moreover, we have lost the measures of state support. What are we to do in such circumstances?
Giving the example of our farm, we just want to show that, despite the reduction of the state support, Russian agriculture can continue to successfully exist when based on the planned economy with the use of our farming technologies. What does it consist of? Nothing new. We use neither European system of plant protection, nor American or Chinese. We use only our own products and manage to keep our farm at the level of absolutely break-even enterprise. I’ll say more, highly profitable enterprise.
We want to prove that we should not rely on the WTO; we should trust our own domestic technologies, which we successfully introduce.
I’ll give you an example: in Orel region, as well as in other areas located in this zone, we easily get yields of more than 60 quintals of winter wheat and more than 50 quintals of spring wheat, more than 100 quintals of grain maize, etc… We know that this is not the last limit. Such a farm can exist independently without any governmental support measures.
Question. You talk so proudly about the scientific potential of your enterprise, but time goes by, how do you solve the problem of staff continuity, do many young people link their destiny with the agrochemical industry?
Karakotov S. D. Unfortunately, metropolitan young people — graduates from specialized universities, are reluctant to work according to their specialty. Due to the fact that they have no housing problem, they opt for trade, business, etc., where they can be better paid. But there are some good peripheral universities, graduates of which consciously want to work in their field of specialization and can work. They are just those youngsters that we figure on; we provide them with the accommodation and with all necessary conditions for their professional growth and development. That’s why we don’t have any shortage of personnel.
Question. You widely invest in the most modern equipment and high-tech production processes. What effect does it exert on the quality of the products?
Karakotov S. D. Visitors coming to share experience with us can see that the preparations we have created significantly differ from those existing in the market. Our substances have minimum impact on growth processes. We achieve high germination of seeds due to preparations for seed treatment that we have elaborated using up-to-date nanotechnologies. For example, if we compare two preparations (solutions) intended for the same purpose (one is ours and the other is produced by a big foreign company), we will clearly see small particles present in the foreign product. On the contrary, in our solution these particles are so microscopic that they cannot be seen. Being so small, they penetrate better inside plants what stimulates its growth and protects them from diseases far better than traditional products. It works like a medicine: if the medicine is dissolved, it provides effect faster and protects the human organism better. We call our products «micro-emulsions», «colloidal systems», «nanoscale emulsions». They are many times more efficient at the same dose of application.
It is a new course of development that we head our ship. Analogies do not exist in the contemporary world. We turned out to be the first in the world and at this moment in time, we see nobody who would be able to follow us.
By the way, our working solution remains transparent a week and more, but any imported preparation begins to flake gradually giving deposit at the bottom. This is the specific feature of new kinds of plant protection agents we have used since 2005. Thus, we gave birth to the nanoscale product which has aroused great echo within general public, because of the fact that it is a drug fighting plants illnesses two times more efficiently than any European herbicide! Our preparation can also be used not only to protect plants, but for the protection of leaves. Another peculiarity consists in the length of effectiveness: ordinary preparations can remain on the surface only 20–25 days, but ours — within 40–45 days. This advantage allows to preserve the crop during the period of its vegetation with only one treatment.
If we consider one of the chemical preparations of this line related to herbicides fighting weeds, we will also find the advantage of our product: a normal plant treatment needs
1,5–2 times less product. Consequently, the negative impact of the drug on the ground and on the growing culture will be reduce proportionally and, at the same time, weeds will be effectively destroyed. Those who worked with us, got convinced of the effectiveness of our products and don’t seek other drugs any more.
Question. Among products you propose in the market, there are semi-products of medicinal and pharmaceutical purposes. Did you decide to take upon it seriously, can you give more details?
Karakotov S. D. Now we have approached to the creation of a range of drugs of pharmaceutical purpose. We have all opportunities to carry out chemical synthesis and to develop the most up-to-date technologies and we already have elaborated a number of such products. These are preparations for the improvement of the cerebral blood circulation; these are drugs for the treatment of heart diseases… To be brief, we create the substance itself, so that to offer it to the companies engaged in dosing, in manufacturing tablets, injections, etc…
We are making progress actively in this direction. Only today at our morning briefing we discussed the creation of two new products, one of which is intended for the treatment of heart diseases, and the other for the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease, multiple sclerosis, senile dementia. This is the direction of drugs creation we move in. One of such products is already in course; we produce it as technical article which will follow further to pharmaceutical industry.
Indeed, it is a very important sector. If with the crash of former Soviet Union almost all the pharmaceutical
enterprises were liquidated, now we observe a significant rise precisely in this area. Those companies which will be ready to synthesize new molecules will be in high demand, namely in Russia, because of our so far heavy dependence on imports. Therefore, the government focuses efforts on the creation of domestic pharmaceutical units.
Question. You come from Karachay-Cherkessia; do you have business ties with your homeland?
Karakotov S. D. We have close business relation with Karachay-Cherkessia. Recently we acquired a herd of sheep of Karachay breed. It is well-known that the meat of this breed is the most delicious all over the world. Even before the Russian revolution, it was exported to different countries. Leo Tolstoy mentions in his novel «The Living Corpse» that roast Karachay lamb was served in an Italian restaurant. Two years ago we started pedigree stock breeding of sheep and goats. Now we already have one and a half thousand head of cattle, the meat is already delivered to Moscow market. The sheep from Karachay-Cherkessia is adapted in Orel region without any problem and breed perfectly well.
Question. Salis Dobayevich, you are known not only as a scientist, but as a man living in constant creative search. I see a tool in your hands that you used to call a «ruler»…
Karakotov S. D. Really, you see a standard agronomic ruler, it has four sides, each side makes 33.3 cm. Every agronomist, coming into the field, should have such a ruler. We produce this tool for our clients, because it contains a lot of useful information about drugs, there is also weeds control schedule and other information, though its surface is only 0.1 square meters. The ruler is very simple to use. It has to be put to the area where weeds with cultivated plants are growing, and to count the quantity of weeds in this area. Then, multiplying the received number by 10 you will get the number of weeds by square meter. The same method is used to calculate the number of cultivated plants germinating in the site. Basing on the received numbers, it is easy to make conclusion about the future yield of the site.
Question. Salis Dobayevich, could you tell us a few words about your plans for the future?
Karakotov S. D. Well, we have huge plans to promote our technologies not only in our country but also outside the Russian Federation. We deliver our products and technologies approximately to 10 countries of the former USSR, with the exception of Baltic Sea states and Georgia, because they have their own peculiarities and specific crops. For example, cotton requires special chemicals, cereals are grown on irrigation, whien is not practiced on Russian soil. We program to work actively in those countries which form and create their food safety. These are Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Kazakhstan. Therefore, our strategic plans are developing actively in these territories. We have already enjoyed good results of cooperation with those countries, which would allow our relations to develop to mutual benefit.
We are very interested in further cooperation with Mongolia. We have co-operated with our Mongolian partners for many years, demonstrating capacities of our technologies. I think that they are also interested in such co-operation and find it profitable, because they can provide themselves with wheat, crops, things they have not done before.
Our research backlog contains a number of preparations that do not yet exist in European countries. These products will soon pass the state registration procedure, and the European community will appreciate what they could not create themselves.
Having the possibility of chemical synthesis, we are now very close to creating products of pharmaceutical purposes.
Question. Your enterprise is realla huge empire requiring a lot of time and efforts to keep it in dynamic functioning. However, when rare moments of rest occur, how do you prefer to spend your leisure time?
Karakotov S. D. Indeed, I have free time very rarely. But when it happen, I prefer to spend it not in the company of stamp collections (laughs), but surrounded by my friends, I take pleasure to cook them delicious dishes with my own hands and to sumptuously entertain them. We like to play billiards or tennis.
Thank you very much for the interview, Salis Dobayevich. I wish your company prosperity and further success!
Karakotov S. D. Thank you. I wish the editorial staff of the magazine «Golden Plaza» great creative successes!
